Stuffed into the Subaru
We made it just outside Paducah
But all the campsites were flooded
so we found a clearing off a side road

After dusk, as we pitched our tents
Andy’s headlamp revealed eight million glistening eyes
in the grass we thought was just laced with dew
Only then we realized that we were standing
in a sprawling field of spiders

At dawn we packed up
and took off to the riverside
Bought some ice and Miller High Life
We swam in the Ohio
in the sweltering heat until
it was time to look up for exactly
one hundred and sixty-one seconds

The totality unveiled eight million glistening stars
in the sky above, the ring of light burst from the eclipsing moon
We stood silently in awe, and I thought
"I am safe, I am safe, I am safe"
